Trains and Boats and Planes (without the planes)
- 18 October 2010 13:2175459I note that the present Government is still keen on extending the HST link to the Midlands and then beyond. Apparently this is going to cost a small fortune! Why?
If you look back at the growth of Canals and Railways in the UK historically they were dug/constructed/erected by gangs of labour (many imported from Ireland).
Surely with a large out of work workforce there must be some of them able to push a wheelbarrow?
Why are we not digging mega-canals (as the French have - which can also redistribute water from the wet North to the dry South - + provide 'green' transport for goods) and putting in a half decent railway infrastructure?

Theres a bit of an oul tune for you.
I have heard it mentioned in the past about digging canals to bring water south where there are shortages and are likely to be even more shortages in the years ahead. But with regard to travel, we are all interested in speed now. How quick we can get from A to B.
