Train ticket madness
- 13 October 2010 00:5474762I've just been checking train ticket prices (with a railcard) for a pre Christmas trip to Edinburgh.
Outward -
HST Dover to St Pancras, any train after 9.00am, then Kings Cross to Edinburgh, £27.40
Return same route -
Leave Edinburgh 9.30, any HST to Dover, £27.40.
Leave Edinburgh 10.30, catch first HST to Ashford, change for slow train to Dover, £27.40
Leave Edinburgh same 10.30 train, wait 30 min at St Pancras for direct HST to Dover, arrive 10 minutes later, £84.50
That's 3 times the price to arrive 10 minutes later - crazy - 13 October 2010 06:2474764Ray yes I think we have talked about similarly bizarre rail pricings before, in that there is a whole brace of anomalies in the train pricing system. Presumably because there are different rail companies running different regions. You would need to be a mathematician to get the best deal..something beyond me.
By the way, have you considered flying. Im just trying to think off the top of my head...isnt there a new service to Edinburgh/Glasgow from Manston? - 13 October 2010 10:2774787My daughter has used the Manston flight a couple of times, about £70 each way once all charges are included, plus parking or taxi to get there, but she was impressed with the service and will use regularly if it keeps going.
Last time we took her she was the only person going through checkin and security, quite a change from Gatwick. It reminded us of when we took my in-laws there for a Yugotours holiday flight, probably in the 80s, before the terminal was built. Check in and baggage check was in an old nissen hut, then they waited behind a tape line. We said goodbye to them, walked out to cross to the car park and bumped in to them again being lead by the checkin guy who had just changed hats to be a tour rep.
