11:1489962surprised to read that the high street bakers, butchers and fishmongers are making a bit of a comeback.
the last 3 months have shown consecutive growth after 5 years of continual decline.
december's sales on the high street were 2.8% up on the previous year while supermarket sales were 1.8% down.
since 2008 the number of small food retail outlets has risen by 11% and the number of farm shops has doubled over the same period.

11:3989965Good luck to all the small shops I hope trade keeps improving for them.
I wonder if the bad weather helped in getting the high street trade up as most of the really large supermarkets are out of town, not a good thing when people are unable to travel in their cars to reach them.

12:5089970We shop in Whitstable a lot, plenty of independant butchers, greengrocers, fish shops and bakers, there's more choice and the competition keeps the prices down. Lets hope it's an upward trend.

14:3389986i think that the concept of small independent shops fits in well with whitstable.
i think that the spending power there is much higher than in dover.

re; post 2
not so sure about the weather changing people's shopping habits, remember how treacherous our shopping centre was during the freeze?
most supermarkets are out on by-passes serviced by busy roads that beat the conditions found in town centres.

23:3290042it defo did for me Howard, bread was becoming a problem to get hold of as the main roads were still awful in Faversham and the roads arent exactly the best during nice times , so i ordered bread from the bakers and ensured i had some!
It definately slowed down trade as well.

07:4390048Most traders are having a hard time just now - have done for quite a while, but with improving weather (?), things may get better for them - your support will help too.

09:4790056Exactly my point Howard, they are on by-passes but when people cannot get the car out of the street where they live they use the local shops.
