22:2489610Last Saturday I went to my favourite town of Tenderten to shop.I needed to buy a small child a gift .What did I find a very old fashioned toy shop .Delightful staff to help and advise .
Is there no one in Dover who can see how some of the specialised shops are required ?We used to have a lovely shop sold Handbags and leather gloves .Good quality ladies clothes .
It would stop us locals having to go elsewhere ,where shopping is a good experience .
Where do you buy toys in Dover now Woolworths and Gamleys have gone not forgetting Mothercare .

22:3489611Try the toy shop at the entrance to Charlton Centre, that one was open well before Christmas, although they do have a rather restricted choice.

22:3489612Blame Tesco, who sucked in the council and the townspeople, promised free buses, offered decent cafe facilities, then withdrew them one by one as the town dried up and became dependent on Tesco. They are toxic. And the people who believe in them are too.

22:4489613the one at the front of the charlton centre is an excellent business, has stacks of catalogue stuff that has been sent back at knock down prices.
always an attractive display.
susan mentions mothercare, when they left a shop opened in priory street.
roger asked them to join his loyalty scheme, they declined as they thought they had a captive market.
some months later they closed down.

00:2289622Such a shame our toy shop in the Charlton Centre couldn't have held out a little longer. It went down just before Woolworths announced its closure. I'm sure it would have done well last Christmas if only it could have held on another few months as it would have taken much of the trade back.
Oh well, you can't live in the past...

08:0789629Just to clarify the toy shop that Phil mentions would be Gamleys which was at the rear of Charton Centre, not a prime position for any shop.
The new shop is at the entrance opposite Delmains.

08:3189632I remember that Baby shop Howard. All I was asking then with the Dover Loyalty Scheme, was £3.00 a week - two cups of coffee a week, so not much to be promoted on a good web-site and in the Dover Express every month.
He kept saying he's never had to advertise as he was the only baby shop in town - I never saw more than one person in there, most times I passed, it was empty.
I took no money from that scheme, but put all the money back in it, to keep the full-page monthly adverts going. That's why I stopped it, because it was costing me too much money - mad really, but I thought it was helping the businesses.
Mind you, £3.50 a week is all businesses would have to pay to join up to my Channel Chamber Dover, pro-active Business Support scheme, which has so much more to offer and it's still the price of two cups of coffee a week.

16:0889667I also approached the Baby Shop before they officially opened and pointed out the benefits of placing an advertisement on Doverforum. But I got exactly the same answer that Roger received from the loyalty scheme.
We also plough back all monies raised through advertising support to keep the forum going for the extended community of Dover and beyond, it works for all our advertisers.
