Reading this thread I started to think how Dover compares to central Calais or Boulogne-sur-Mer for shops, and even with the high number of vacant retail units, I'd say Dover is miles better than those to over the water (the hypermarkets don't count).

Haven't been into the town for about half a decade, but to me Calais was always more like a city compared to Dover's town. Especially once you cross over the bridge away from the tourist area.

Way more industry as well. Like a North of England port of old.

I'd say Boulogne has more to offer the tourist than Dover does in terms of restaurants and shops. It's more like Canterbury than Dover in that respect (again, it's been a good half a decade since I've been there).
