  Sandwich is more affluent because of it's quaintness while Deal has really only become more affluent since the pits closed.
  
  Dover has remained stagnant because it is known by far to many as simply a port town and the stepping stone to France, its historical side has never been properly promoted or even enough. That awful road to Eastern Docks cutting the town off from the sea front definitely has not helped the image to anyone who makes their way to catch a ferry, full of lorries and the depressingly dull rear view of the flats.
