    I learnt to drive in the winter in Switzerland. It is very rare there that one is unable to take to the road, however there are some rules: don't change down to first gear if you can help it. Give way to vehicles coming up a hill. You really need either studded tyres or chains. It might be worth while for people here to start having a set of chains in case.
