my understanding is that we are all entitled to pay what we think is a fair price in a restaurant by law but i suspect that this was a pre-planned scam.

The law is clear on this. If you have received poor quality food or drink and cannot agree a reduced price for what you have consumed, you commit no offence if you pay what you consider a fair sum. It's then up to the restaurateur to pursue you through the civil courts. If you refuse to pay anything at all, particularly if you have consumed drinks, you are guilty of the common law offence of making off without payment. Slow service does not come into it. Speed of service does not figure in the implied contract between supplier and consumer.
This scam was once pulled on me at the Yew Tree by a traveller family who all consumed Sunday roasts (cleaning their plates) and then said it was all crap. They paid for their drinks after I threatened to call the police. They knew the law and were taking full advantage of it. Some years later the same crowd came to Blakes and I took great pleasure in telling them to p155 off, and why.

That must have been a very satisfying moment and definitely one to relish Peter.

Poor food or poor service should always be complained about in a civilised manner to the Manager who in most cases would be pleased to come to some mutually beneficial agreement.
Walking out without paying is dishonest and does not help to improve the situation.

that was the point i was making in the opening post monsieur, genuine complaints can be sorted but this comes across as a scam.
