The trouble with flood defences ,as Lewes found out, is that in an attempt to control the river/sea it stops the normal ebb and flow of the tide. So that when the sea/river walls are breached the water rushes into the towns and villages and then stays there as it has no means of escape. The defences built to keep it out only result in keeping the water in...Funny enough the only place in Lewes that didn't flood was the monastery built in the Middle Ages. They weren't daft.

Unitl we stop building on flood plains the problem is going to grow. That's what the plains are for...flooding.
