This Years Walk in aid of the YBC
- 5 March 2012 10:18157577I have waited for Clare to get a good head start on her fund raising,and just a note to let you know I am walking Newcastle to Carlisle starting on April 21st a total of 65 miles via Hadrian's Wall.
I usually do it for Charity and this year I am doing it for a local group in Dover and Deal called the Young Balancers Club.The Group is for children with Diabetis which is a growing problem.We all know someone with Diabetis my Mum my Brother My Dad and My Grandmother had/have it.But these children have to inject themselves 4+ times a day.There lives depend on those injection as they are type 1.
Everything they do they have to think about,and I am sure that injecting themselves at School leads to some name calling.
Why am I doing it for the YBC well one of my walking friends son died at 16 with Diabetis and you can imagine what that was like and even 3 years later she is haunted by this and blames herself.The YBC have days out and social evenings and I am working with them to have a American Supper type evening using the youngsters from the show.
As I said we all know someone with Diabetis and we usually expect it to be someone older,but these Children may have had it from a very early age and will be injecting themselves for the rest of thier lives.It is a very small club and very local and if anyone would like to help me raise a little money for them please e mail me on cllrjohngoodwin@dover.gov.uk Thanks!If you knew what I know,we would both be in trouble! - 5 March 2012 18:43157658That's a very good thing to do John - well done. Roger - 6 March 2012 00:06157719Thanks Roger what is weird is my Grandson has been having a few funny turns recently and he was told by the Doctor today he may be diabetic,he isnt 2 until next month.We should find out later in the month as the hospital are going to do some tests.If you knew what I know,we would both be in trouble!
- 6 March 2012 07:46157730Hope he isn't diabetic John, it will lead to a life of complications. I know through literature I receive, that much research is going on and new ways to treat diabetes are coming out.

Roger - 5 April 2012 10:09163402Just thought I would bring this back to the top as it is only 2 weeks away and there is an article in the Mercury on page 22 with myself and Joshua in my walking boots.So if anyone wants to give to young people with Diabetis please e- mail me.The walk is from Newcastle to Carlisle over 3 and a bit days 65 miles via Hadrian's wall.
I met with the Young Balancers Club last week and was told there are about 500 children in East Kent with the illness.There lives depend on 4 injections a day as they are type 1 Diabetic.Lovely bunch of children and they were at Tides and didnt want to get out of the water.
My target is £325 that is £5 a mile and I have just crossed the £200 mark.To add to the pain I am also watching the Osmonds in Newcastle
