17:5581662On the forum i never hide my beliefs in the party i suppport, although iv left that party.
but i do try to give my view and balance up what does at times just become a labour bashin, sometimes for good reason.
i tryd to be humorous, or even show where baIrryw and myself can even come close to agreement.
I recall peter once saying im more level headed, not so sure about that lol
i try to give a personal view, but do find some forumites dont like challenge, or my being critical of the tories/alliance(or are these two one party now lol
)
Of course i will continue to give my view, sometimes balancing up the views put on here by political persons.
and others just my view
what we mustnt get into is personl attacks
or fall out because we dont agree
or
put people down because we feel we know better.
I'v found even in my later years that life is all about learning, from when your born to the day you pop your clogs
we can all learn from each other.
im aware those tory posters wont ever convince me, nor I them but hopefully that won't stop us posting, im always happy to hear from any poster, and will comment if i agree/disagree
i realy must stop having this time to think lol

18:5081669One of the reasons I will never join a political party is that there are so many things about which politicians of all parties agree but, in their public pronouncements, only seek to attack their opponents by stressing the differences of opinion, not the areas of agreement. Why? To a large extent this also happens on this forum but I noticed a while ago Keith that you were trying to buck that trend. Hence my comment about your having become more level headed. Others should follow your example, then perhaps we can all work for Dover and abandon the internecine warfare which has held the town back for 50 years. You should all also notice that Charlie, since being elected, has not been Labour-bashing locally. I say locally because he has certainly had a few pops at Labour in the Commons. But locally he has formed links with certain Labour figures. This has upset a few people on the Red side of DTC, I understand. Tough sh1t, any politician who will not engage with the other side for the common good is a dinosaur and should go.

I have always tried to be helpful and balanced in my view.
of course i have a lean towards a party and thats unlikely to change.
I think its fair to say over my years i have worked closely with many other party members from other political parties and encouraged others to do so.
you may recall my comment on a labour cllr who was horriefied to see me having a cup of tea with paul watkins!!!! we may differ on the political front, but i have many tory friends probably outnumber the labour friends i have lol!!!!!!!
have to say peter, on charlie hes no different to gwyn before him playing the poltical game and i wouldnt say he was any better/worse than any other MP for dover.
have to say over the years we have had some good MP's
David ennals
peter Rees
have to say most arrogant was david shaw not just because he was tory lol
but the way he spoke to locals was one of he knew best and put people down
never understood why he and gwyn would avoid ever being in the same room

10:2881732I agree with you both, I think this forum is a great platform that I have learnt much from. Most are great posters, some are not. That's life. I lean more towards my family and friends more than I do to politics but I am a labour supporter and at this moment would not vote any other way.
I have probably learnt more from the few on here but I think they are lacking in vision not to listen to others.
In my Mining Heritage Talks that we do around schools and halls, the one question is always asked, what was it like to grow up in a miner's family, what was community spirit amongst the miner's like? It's a very hard question to answer, feeling safe and being happy, having so many friends and family to grow up with, is enough for the kids but for adults I recall the feelings by telling them how I could play in my street with about a dozen kids who's mums and dads were all my uncles and aunties. We played in the streets we played in their house's and we went on trips together, we was and still are one big happy family. In my teens I began to realise that not many of them was actually blood relatives, they were my dad's work mates but that made no difference. I can remember writing my guest list for my second marriage, 3 of my uncles were my wife's uncles, It did make us delve a little bit, just in case.
The point I want to make and one that I use to emphasise what our community spirit was like and still is like, is this. Every one of those families are still, my families, we love them the same and we mourn them the same, there is a bond that cannot be broken. Paul Watkins could not be further, politically away from me but that does not stop us from still having that bond, his father, my uncle Alex, was my dad's best mate and my dad was Godfather to Paul. We don't mix much or meet up much but Paul is still part of my family and I respect him very much.
He will not be moved in his beliefs, rightly so for him but he does listen to others. That's what puts him apart from a few others on this forum. We will never learn if we do not listen.

20:1681804Keith, I agree with most of what you say. I have voted Conservative all my life that does not stop me seeing the good ideas that the other parties have or the faults with mine.

20:2081806Peter to say that Charlie has formed links with certain Labour members may well be true, but I noticed recently Bob Markham is on the steering group of the People's Port,Bob Markham was a Labour Mayor but as I understand it,is now not a member of the Labour Party.
I don't know why he left and I am only going by what I have been told,he may have left soon after I beat him for the District Council nomination for Tower Hamlets 4 years ago, because that is when he stopped talking to me!

22:4581822John, although I see Bob often we have never talked about politics so I dont know what his present leanings are. I had always assumed that as he had been a Labour mayor and is still a town councillor, he is Labour through and through. But he doesn't wear his politics on his sleeve.

22:5381825Peter he is a Town Cllr,ex Tory but now I understand he is no longer a member of Labour was a brilliant Mayor and I know he hasn't been very well. Also a brilliant magician.
Keith I wasn't being negative,in fact the opposite, there are some people who don't talk to me because of my political beliefs, but I get on well with all the District Councillors, and I respect them for the work they do on both sides,I was going to say 3 sides.........yes I will include the Libs.
Paul Watkins and I have regular chats,he normally says High Speed return to London, and I say any underground Paul, seriously we talk to each other often.
If you knew what I know,we would both be in trouble!

surely any town councillors that are elected on a ticket of any kind should they choose to give up membership of the party they were put up for election by should stand down and seek re election as an indy or whatever they want to be
or re new there labour membership.
john if you dig a little further you will find other town cllrs in very prominent positions also not members
but i leave that to you as im no loinger a member its nowt to do with me
