I've just been given a 1955 BEA plane ticket from Waterloo Air Terminal which came with accompanying post card of a BEA Ambassador (Elizabethan Class, named after our new Queen) and Vickers Viscount. As the title says, they don't make 'em like they used to.....look at the quality of this for an air ticket!
The journey was from Waterloo Air Terminal to Belfast Nutts Corner Airport, formerly RAF Nutts Corner (about 4 miles from the current George Best International Airport). The aircraft in the postcard below are (top) a de Havilland Ambassador Elizabethan Class and (bottom) a Vickers Viscount Discovery Class. A Viscount very similar to this one crashed at Nutts Corner in 1957 with the loss of all 5 crew on board plus a BEA executive and his wife who had copped a free ride over to Northern Ireland; this crash started the process that led to the ultimate closure of Nutts Corner in favour of the nearby Aldegrove (now George Best International)
I'm forever indebted to my friend Derek Brett for the gift of this ticket and postcard; the postcard is worth a small fortune, let alone a pristine condition ticket like this; a treasured addition to my collection. Thank you very much, Derek.
True friends stab you in the front.
