Actually in 1862 the Prince of Wales, son of Queen Victoria (later to become King Edward VII) received his first tattoo, a Jerusalem cross. It wasn't just the men though, Victorian society women collected tattoos including Winston Churchill's mother, who wore a serpent on her wrist (I have one on my upper left arm.) Maud Wagner was the first known woman tattooist. In 1904 she traded a date with her tattooist husband-to-be for an apprenticeship!
