Following the thread on 'filthy streets', I walked down Castle Street yesterday and was very surprised at the state of some of the properties and surrounds. Empty property near corner of Russell Street, has woodwork falling off. Generally the 'cellar' areas in many properties, visible from the street are very untidy, littered, tall weeds and in a general state of complete neglect and seem to provide a receptacle for rubbish.
I must say I did admire the beautiful hanging baskets - the one bright part of the street, and the lovely display in Jenni's bridal shop, which were outstanding.
I cannot understand why most of the Georgian, listed properties can be treated in this way and no action is taken to remedy the disgraceful appearance of steps, paths, paintwork, windows, cellar windows.
Yesterday there was also household (food) rubbish on pavements where gulls had obviously had a go at bags, definitely not nice for residents and importantly, visitors to our historic town and port.
In the 40 years I have lived down here I have never seen it looking so bad.

I'm glad to report that the litter in front of the"Cabin" in the High Street has now been cleared.

Hey Kath
Dont get me started on rubbish on bin days.. the sweeper is normally out nice and early.. but they come so early most people have to leave it out over night...
I do know that some landlords have been spoken to about the appearance of their shops..
i try and keep mine tidy.. inside and out.. Sheli keeps coming and kicking me to do more tidying inside...!!
And thanks! I love changing the window, but its going to stay the same for a couple of weeks for everyone to admire THE dress!

Back when I was working for the Dover Chamber of Commerce, I had walked all along Castle Street, around Market Square, up Cannon Street and Biggin Street, taking photos of all the buildings that needed (many still need) tidying up/refurbishing.
I must admit I was very surprised at the state of many of the buildings in Castle Street - mostly the basement areas with the buddlea (?), tall weeds and rubbish.
I started to write letters to the owners and took all the Castle Street photos to David H. but don't know what happened, if anything.
