the poppies and grasses are coming on quite nicely now, unfortunately one of the sections(not photographed) had a lot of weeds in.
paul holt - the legend of samphire hoe was out of his comfort zone, here explaining everything to visitors.
paul is on the left just to the side of the lady going through his pockets.

the rough sea conditions are of no concern to intrepid dovorians.
noticed that there a lot more rowers out there this year, i read somewhere that the club competes in a league so things must be taken seriously.

re: the opening post here, i have received this e mail from councillor pat sherratt
that sheds light on yet more committed volunteers doing their level best to make dover a better place without wanting to be in the limelight
pat has kindly given permission for it to be posted here.
Hi Howard
Good to see you this morning on the seafront.
Paul Holt gave an interesting talk with regard to plants that are tolerant to shingle conditions. As he went out of his way to explain there are no weeds only various species of wild plants.
The event was on the DTC website and was organised by Dover Arts Development (Joanna Jones and Clare Smith).
100 of the small plug plants were ordered from British Wild Flower Plants (BWFP). However BWFP were so pleased that this community led planting was to take place they donated another 900 plugplants. Hence why we needed a good workforce on the seafront this morning.
Several varieties were recommended by Paul (I hope to get a list at sometime) and as they are small and the shingle is walked on a high percentage will not survive. But as Paul stated those that do will, like at Samphire Hoe, generate the natural shingle species. Interestingly over 3000,000 plug plants were planted on the shingle at Samphire Hoe
As there are no weeds (only wild plants) at some time I expect there may be a need to be selective with what plants are retained.
The volunteers took about three hours to do the planting.
Am sending the initial details from Dover Arts Development as all those organisations that assisted are shown.(RIBA, Dover Arts Development, Tonkin Liu, Dover Town Council, White Cliffs Countryside and British Wild Flower Plants)

a lot of people were taking advantage of a break in the weather to enjoy our seafront.
thankfully 4 coach loads of people ignored charlie's depiction of it and still visited.
seeing this windbreak advertising other services made me wonder whether such things as windbreaks and sun loungers were for hire from the centre there.

aha Howard, the windbreaks and deck chairs are in the planning to be hired from the centre.
I think it would be all blown away so far this summer....hopeless for beach rental!

Indeed James. I understand that a deck-chair licence is available if someone wanted to try their hand at rented them out.
On another subject, did you get the 3 documents I sent you recently: the Tourism Strategy, the Plan of Action for Dover (Town) and how to bring a successful street-market to Dover ?

Howard, a weed is just a wild plant in the wrong place - those are all supposed to be there, you must get to one of Paul Holt's talks

i realise that ray, "wild flowers" are all removed from the flower beds along the seafront so why are they left in this area set aside for a selection of grasses?

I know some of you like it but I think it looks an uncared for mess.
