Politics in Scotland is even nastier than it is south of the border. The totally non-endearing Nicola Sturgeon was in the wars again yesterday firing loaded live salvos at all her opposition..those of all colours and every hue. To say she is a wee bit of a grumpy bovine with a surefire charisma shortfall would not be an exageration, but this arch crony of Alex Salmond has been left to fend off the opposition to Scottish Independence with the flack coming north of the border from both Labour and Conservative and anyone else who can wield a political stick.
As the Scot Nats rush headlong for Independence and of course are ever hopeful of taking the population with them, they have suddenly come up against a major hurdle, which apparently they didn't see coming round the bend and directly at them.
It is all about the EU.
When the chips are down the EU it would seem, is a prize possession, nobody in their right mind wants to be excluded from that big economic party. The Scot Nats had assumed all along that following independence they would automatically carry on as members of the EU but this whole vision has been knocked into a cocked hat. Mr Barroso, president of said EU, has pointed out clearly that their membership would not be automatic...as indeed have many other big players.
Alastair Darling for example said that if Scotland were joining afresh they may have to wait many years and would almost certainly be obliged to join the Euro when doing so. It is now the currency of choice or obligation for new members ! or so it appears.
This has wrong footed the bid for Independence. To chose to leave the Euro Club is one thing, but to have it thrust upon the tentative populace, already shaken if not stirred over independence... is something else altogether. Kicked out on your naked rear end is a bitter pill, and as the Scot Nats know, it would almost certainly be a step too far for the voter to leap. The European Union was supposed to be the brace that strengthened Scotland when setting foot into the wilderness following the break-up of the UK. Paddling your own canoe in that same isolated wilderness is not the happiest of prospect.
I think the vote for Independence may have died the death of a thousand cuts.
Picture shows Nicola on a good day...
