Well, not quite, but I spotted this attractive vessel in the harbour at lunchtime today, after I had bumped into Vic and his good lady near the Market Square. Seemed strange seeing those 3 masts sticking up, after seeing that we now only have two.
One of those euro millionaires dropping by? It was a bit murky out there, hence, not a very sharp image, as you may have noticed by the ferry going out the other side of the breakwater.
Tell them that I came, and no one answered.

Ed - I'm assuming that dates from the Queen Mother becoming Lord Warden in 1979 ?
Been nice knowing you :)

Scotchie: Super picture. My black and white aerial image is an undated one I obtained off Ebay. Think it is probably a Skyfoto and they were in colour by 1979. Also the destroyer in the background would have been long in the tooth by 1979. Therefore I suspect that the photo may date from the Queen's visit in 1958, clip below Googled from the Montreal Gazette.
The greetings card is one I purchased in the Post Office in Bench Street many years ago. Topically, the three radar masts can be seen in the background. Now the Royal Yacht has been pensioned off without replacement, the radar masts are down to two and living on borrowed time, and the port itself is about to be flogged off. Remember when we were proud to be British?
JHG: The Oslo in port is the Stemat Oslo which is a multi-purpose barge on the Eastern Arm. The three masted schooner is the Eendracht which is a Dutch sail training ship for youngsters.

This is the cover of the programme for the Coronation Review of the Fleet at Spithead in 1953. It shows Her Majesty the Queen looking radiant against the backdrop of the mighty battleship HMS Vanguard, flagship of the Home Fleet. She had previously sailed on HMS Vanguard with the rest of the Royal Family when the ship was used as the Royal Yacht for the Royal Tour of South Africa in 1947.
The use of a suitably adapted major warship is, to my way of thinking, the way to restore the use of a Royal Yacht to the monarchy. The previous Royal Yachts conferred great prestige when used for state visits and for the more mundane affairs of government such as trade missions. Britannia had a secondary role as a hospital ship but was unable to be employed in that capacity in the Falklands due to incompatibility of fuel with the other vessels.
One of the new aircraft carriers being constructed might well fit the bill, particularly since the ships are to be named Queen Elizabeth and Prince of Wales! Alternatively, a one-off guided missile cruiser, an enlarged version of the Daring class guided missile destroyers presently entering service, would make a spectacular Royal Yacht with the requisite additional accommodation being designed for immediate conversion to an operational function in time of war.

This old map of my father`s I saved many years ago. Ed`s post above reminded me of it. It measure`s 28" x 40", cost 6/- and it shows the layout of all the ships which were taking part in the fleet review, together with the route that the royal yacht `Britannia` would be taking between them all.
