80 pence to be exact at Chapter Eight
One evening recently I went there to eat with my two daughters, they were both home from uni for the weekend and fancied a chinese meal so off we went. We had our meal and drinks and then I needed to take some tablets which have to be taken after meals. I asked for some tap water.
When we went to pay the bill I noticed they had charged me 80p for the tap water. I queried this with the waitress, she told me that this was their policy and that I would have to pay it.
Needless to say I didn't leave a tip and I wont be going back there again

I'm not surprised Colette. A few years back we stayed at a lovely little pub in the Yorkshire Dales. The landlady, who was pretty fearsome, hated serving up tap water on the basis that she had to pay for it. She used to tell her American customers that the tap water was "dodgy" and it was far safer to drink the bottled variety. I often wonder how much profit she made out of this little ruse.

bad business sense in my view, 3 meals being paid for so adding 80p for a glass of water would always offend the customer.

Maybe the water was free, 80p was for loan and washing up of the glass.

They certainly haven't improved their reputation with this revelation, good for you Colette for telling us about it.

There's always a little truth behind every "Just kidding", a little emotion behind every "I don't care" and a little pain behind every "I'm ok".

Very short-sighted of them - Tony wouldn't have charged anything I'm sure, when he owned it.

Establishments with DDC alcohol licenses are required by the terms of their license to provide free tap water to customers on request. If they charged 80p they are in breach and should be reported to DDC licensing dept.

Yes indeed, I would report that too. It must be a fine-able breach and will stop them doing so again in the future.

Well that's interesting to hear re breach of alcohol license, thanks guys. We had ordered large drinks with our meal too which made it even worse to be charged for the drink of water..........Its an utter disgrace

looking at the viewing figures of this thread it won't have done much for their reputation.

I wouldn't eat there if you paid me to, I'm afraid. It's never happened to me but I know people who've had bad stomachs etc after eating there. We always go to The Good Luck - fab food, reasonable prices, huge portions, lovely waiting staff, and free water if you want it.
I think we are all guinea pigs in the middle of an experiment for which they have forgotten to set up a control group!

I thought it was always pretty good when Tony owned it, but it began to "drop-off" and eventually he sold it and stayed on as Manager, but you'd have thought, kept the standards up - sadly it seems, not.
Let us know how you get on Colette.
