The price of DVDs...
- 14 February 2011 09:2092558I buy and watch a lot of DVDs and Blu-Rays.
The quality of the picture and sound is far superior to TV transmissions and its cheaper than a vist it the cinema (though I often do that too).
DVDs are very cheap now and Blu-Rays can often be picked up in cheaper deals, but many films do not justify the increased price of Blu Ray (poor transfers or the subject material).
Mostly I get films but sometimes I will buy TV series that I missed on transmission or were only on Sky.
A month ago I bought a box set of all 8 series of 24 which I had missed when it was transmitted.
I thought it expensive at £75 but I like the subject matter and the concept interested me. Also I realised that the £75 paid for 8 series on 48 DVD's each with 4 episodes plus a bonus one-off feature length programme is a hell of a lot of entertainment value, however you look at it, over 145 hours worth as it turns out...
I have still a long way to go to finish the box-set but it certainly is gripping TV and it is well worth what was paid for it.
But this morning I logged in to Amazon (where I bought my set) and found the same set advertised for £129.... At that price I would never have bought it (though it is so good it would still have been worth it - but I would never have found that out!)
In a matter of 4/5 weeks the price goes up from £75 to £129.
Usually after the initial release of a DVD the price of tv series goes down once the initial demand is over.
Did Amazon realise they made a mistake with the initial price, I wonder, and was I just lucky to get in when I did? - 14 February 2011 09:3392559Some of my books are sold via Amazon and I find their pricing very hit and miss. Sometimes it's good, sometimes they seem twice as expensive as other places. The pricing also changes frequently (and not always for the better as you have mentioned.) I still check them out if I am looking for something in particular but I can't remember exactly the last time I bought a DVD or book there, it was probably early last year.

Just type in the name and they will automatically compare prices between all major online retailers. These are well worth bookmarking if you regularly buy these things:

Amazon are not always the cheapest - you'll find one major retailer such as Play or HMV will drop a price and suddenly the others will follow very quickly. Barry did get lucky with the "24' set - its currently cheapest price is £98. - 15 February 2011 15:5992745Thanks for those links Phil.
