The keys used as a symbol of the pope's authority refer to the "keys of the kingdom of Heaven" promised to Peter.[Matt. 16:18-19] The terminology of this "commission" of Peter is unmistakably parallel to the commissioning of Eliakim ben Hilkiah in Isaiah 22:15-23. Peter is often depicted in both Western and Eastern Christian art holding a key or a set of keys. There are no physical keys.

All religions are under the same impression that their church is the 'right' or chosen one not just RC but Jews who are still awaiting the Messiahs arrival,Islam and Mohammed ,Latter Day Saints,Buddists and even that raving nutter David Icke. You pays your money and take your chances.
Jesus also said to Peter "Go feed my sheep" but Jesus had no sheep. He meant his followers. All such sayings are left to one's own interpretation of their meaning.
