  Apologies for yet more links but there's loads of information on the web now that gives plenty of background to these sort of things and might surprise us.
  
  Page 9 of this shows the largest category of businesses in Dover district are in construction, presumably a lot of them are self employed builders and similar tradesmen (might even include Alexander the painter!)
