i can see this carrying on when more jobs become available, very difficult to go back to working for somebody when you have had independence.

Self-employment is the only way forward for me. I'd do more if there were more jobs going, but the economic downturn prevents many from having the dosh to get jobs done.
This last factor is an important part of the equation in self-employment.
As self-employed, my earnings were much higher 15 years ago than now.

Apologies for yet more links but there's loads of information on the web now that gives plenty of background to these sort of things and might surprise us.
Page 9 of this shows the largest category of businesses in Dover district are in construction, presumably a lot of them are self employed builders and similar tradesmen (might even include Alexander the painter!)

Yesterday it was garden work, a quick 2 hour job digging, for a tenner.
It's actually the work I like doing most, as it also makes me tremendously fit.
Would be doing much more of the same, but unfortunately many people have transformed their garden into concrete patios to park cars on.
But, I would gladly dig up a tarmac drive and transform it back into a garden.

a chap over the road to me does the same as you alex, having no transport he can only carry around so much equipment.
he got hit by the credit crunch a while back having 3 customers suddenly losing their jobs in the city and unable to hire him for year round work.
you are right about the driveways.
