As already said the BBC did use to commission top playwrights to write challenging stuff, the Wednesday play, Play for Today and Second City Firsts spring to mind. Programmes covering the natural world particularly by David Attenborough would never have been made by a commercial channel because of the huge costs involved.

On the subject of dumbing down I have never understood why they do soaps which should be left to the commercial operators. Around 30 years ago Question Time used to be relevant under the control of Robin Day but the programme should have been dumped about 15 years once it was taken over by publicity seeking politicians that new how to use a sound bite and get an audience with limited attention span shouting and screaming. As for the One Show!!!!
