Thanks for those figures Ross.
Unless my understanding of "Asylum-Seekers" is wrong, I thought it meant that they were fleeing their own country through persecution of some sort; if that is the case, then they were to seek that asylum in the first safe country outside of their own.
Some of those countries are many hundreds, if not thousands of miles from us and there are many countries in between.
Many of the people from the European countries want to come here because they perceive us to be a better-off country and think they can get work etc.
Jean's daughter lives and works in Majorca (for the British Embassy); she is also qualified to teach English to foreign students and has an increasing number of Spanish people wanting to learn English so they can come here for work.
We are paying out too many benefits to people who haven't (yet) put anything into the National till - and this applies to our home grown "don't want to work" people too.
Those who can least afford it, are having money/benefit payments, taken away from them and this is morally and socially, wrong.
