Keith, that is very interesting. My own father lived to 93 and remembered the FIRST war and how he had to walk to school without shoes for a few days until they were given some 'clogs'. His father incidentally did have work, but food and clothing was so short then. Father said what we had to live on in the second w. war was 'good' compared to the First.
Some years ago there was a reunion here of German pows - who wanted to come back - they had worked on local farms and been quite well treated by the locals, many had stayed and married English girls.
The event was very friendly and there were several reunions after about 50 years!
I can clearly remember all the bombed sites (in Grimsby) which were not all cleared until quite a time after the war, and I can also remember things like dried egg and sitting/lying in the Morrison table shelter we had in our house. Here is a sketch of one:
