  This is not even a new idea for the Americans. During the 60's and 70's they used to run a strip in Superman comics where 'grandad' would surprise his grandson with such things as refillable pens and carpet sweepers that did not require plugging in.
  
  Of course things have changed, some better and some worse, but it is attitudes that matter. On that score it is difficult to notice many improvements.
