Well today is the day that housewives all over the UK get out their 'pin money' to place a bet on an event they or the average man doesn't have a clue about. Gone are the days of the housewives favourites like Red Rum and Desert Orchid, Red Alligator etc now it's down to a fine science of picking a horse with the sexiest jockey or an appealing name.
As for myself 'the once a year gambler' I shall go with the tried and tested method of my lucky numbers. So my money will be on horse numbers 3 & 6.
So come on log on and tell us what horse your betting on...before the race starts....and we will learn which forumite has the lucky touch. Jeanne where are you...
Right I find out my horse names and post later.
Good luck everyone

Marek

Yes always good to watch the Grand National. I used to like it when it was even more dangerous but its still good for a thrill. Used to back something every year until recently.
I notice they are now trying to add a bit of glamour with the wimmin dressing up. Its not quite Ascot though is it...more for the massed proles of Liverpool to get their TKMax stuff out of the closet!!!!
Oooh Im ducking...

No need to duck

, I tend to agree.
My choices are Ballabriggs and Quinz

, might even put some money on them if I can sneak into Corals while at work.

I am a big fan of choosing them based on name so I would go for Niche Market
I did that with Bobbys Girl one time, when i was still too young to bet, but Dad did it for me.. and I won something!
Not a horse racing fan so i choose by name to , ive never picked a winner tho .
I love the National, love racing. Bluesea Cracker for me, won the Irish last year, lovely horse. A couple of alternatives, Dooneys Gate at an outside chance and a real possible The Midnight Club. But the National is a bit of a lottery - I shall be watching with glass in hand. My Aunts horses used to win quite a bit, won the Cheltenham Gold Cup one year. Love it!! Enjoy!!

No. 24, State of Play. To win
No. 38, Royal Rosa, Each way
I did have the winner once. Picked at random in a sweep and I stick to that formula. We shall see.
Good luck each.
Ignorance is bliss, bliss is happiness, I am happy...to draw your attention to the possible connectivity in the foregoing.
With a royal wedding coming up any horse with royal in the name would be a good winner , im sure the Queen will put a few quid on it , good luck to all .
Im a strong believer this sort or fun should be banned , horses die at these events just to pleasure the egos of the toffs , maybe we should strap a midget to a jockey and hit him hard with a whip?
Those horses are treated like princes and enjoy their job - horses in the wild would be jumping hedges and fences and dying painfully and alone without having enjoyed a tiny part of the life these magnificent animals enjoy. It is natural to a horse to run and jump, and these horses are rewarded well for their fun. If the horses didn't enjoy it they would be rubbish at it and wouldn't be running the National!

i will have to be a wet blanket and agree with mel and keith on this one.
the race is about 4 and a half miles, much more than normal and with fences that are more dangerous.
i find it hard to believe that horses actually enjoy this sort of challenge, especialy the many that fall and the ones that die.

well had a second and third in the big race today, had a bet on vic venturi you can guess wot happend just like our vic fell at the second hurdle.
its a shame that two of the horses died, but hey look on the bright side rover will be eating like a lord for the next couple of months and not forgetting all that glue.
I put a £1 on the ones I selected for me and the children on the sweepstake at work - the only one we had was don't push it - 3rd - Think I get about £4.00 back - plus the money from the Sweepstake - I think I might still be out of pocket hahah :) It is the only race I bet on in the year.
As my mum is a Deputy Manager for a well known bookies - as they say - you don't find many broke bookies do you - but I think they may have all been a little scared of this race today haha :)
I used to ride daily and spent years dealing with horses - if they didn't enjoy it they wouldn't do it well and wouldn't be in the big races. It is unpleasant when a horse dies, but death and pain are part of Life for all animals, we can't prevent it, and they do live really well, doing something they enjoy for people they love, and they die, when they are injured, quickly and as easily as possible - more than if they were wild. And it always hurts the people concerned, the trainers, owners, riders, who by and large love the animals and care for them excellently.
