Police Community Support Officers are to become the "first line of contact" for members of the public and rebranded as local beat officers, under proposals being considered today by South Yorkshire Police Authority.
Regular officers will be grouped into "taskable teams" available for dealing with serious incidents while all grassroots work on the street will be carried out by the PCSOs.
I have severe reservations about PCSO's & their functions.
I have yet to see enforcement powers that they hold being used & their ability to police communities being effective as opposed to full time "beat" officers presence.
This proposals in South Yorks. is a move too far. It might deliver more bodies but little enforceable policing.
This is an issue for candidates for Kent Police Commissioner.
