The answer, Howard, as to who won the Battle of Waterloo, is that the Scots excelled in courage alongside the English.
The Prussians prevented tens of thousands of French troops reaching the battlefield, and managed to join forces with the British and compel the French to retreat.

And since Waterloo, Britain and France have been allies.

So, alliances are important, and by looking at history, we can appreciate how important they can be. They can prevent defeats, and prevent wars breaking out.

Let's not forget what happened in Singapore, where an - allied - army of well over 100,000 men surrendered to the Japanese, who numbered about 30,000. Yes the white flag was raised!
Fortunately the Japanese do not taunt us about it, even though the numerically superior British and Commonwealth forces had been retreating all the time from northern Malaya to Singapore.
