Howard, we do not need a head of State.
As equals, no-one should be the head of the State.
As for receiving guests from other countries on State visits, a person elected once a year in Parliament could do this, such as the Speaker.

The idea is, everyone who is elected should have a specific function with a defined institutional power.
No one should be almighty-like, and ministers, soldiers and other members of State institutions should not have to swear an oath of allegiance to a mortal person.

For example, I would never stand as candidate MP if I had to swear an oath of allegiance to a mortal person once elected.
