Brian, the Reign of Israel is mentioned in the Bible, and the first society called Israel - situated in Israel - started with Joshua, the disciple of Moses, several hundred years before King David.
King David lived around 1,000 B.C., so you can work it out from there. The first king of Israel was actually Saul, followed by David.

The name Israel starts with Jacob, father of the twelve tribes of Israel, which in effect became thirteen tribes, because the tribe of Joseph became two tribes, whereas the Levites, who did not have a territory for themselves, lived among the other twelve tribes.

You needn't teach me anything about the history of Israel, Brian!
