The Prime Minister said that if the UK pulled out of the EU but wanted to keep the advantages of the single market it would be reduced to the standing of Norway, which has to abide by faxed orders from Brussels bureaucrats. He told a lunch organised by the Parliamentary Press Gallery in Westminster he was in favour of staying in the EU because of its single market.
The comments will be picked over by Eurosceptic Tory MPs who are waiting anxiously for a speech - which could be as early as next week - from Mr Cameron which will set out his vision for the future of Britain and the EU.Admitting that his speech would be made "soon", he said: "I don't want Britain to leave the European Union - I believe we benefit crucially from the single market.
"I think it is worth understanding what leaving would involve - there is the Norway option. You can be like Norway - and you can have full access to the single market but you have absolutely no say over the rules of that market.
