taken a long while to make this law, i know of someone that went on holiday and returned to find a romanian extended family had taken over their house.
it took them over a year to get them evicted and the house was almost totally wrecked by then.

This was a long time coming. The Police can now arrest straight away which is a very good thing in this situation. Squatters have or had no incentive to leave a property as..simples, it gave them accommodation, a roof over their head etc..while the owner trailed through the courts at great expense to re-enforce his right to live in or repossess his own property.
Being a civil matter previously it was very expensive to evict, now it is part of criminal law and therefore much easier...the Police do not have to drive away from a squat situation as they did previously.

A 'Fair-Rent Act' and a strengthening of Local Authority powers over empty properties surely cannot be far behind?

I know so many people that this has happened to causing them a nightmare time and undue stress.

As said about time it has always been such a long winded procedure, to get people out that have no right to be there the fisrt place, the police can now act so lets hope they do now their hands are no longer tied.

we need to stand back a bit on this one,
1; it is correct that some homeless who are unlikely ever to get housed are to
become criminals after this not saying its right or wrong but a consideration
2; the landlords representative when asked if this would help had a far more
realistic outlook, that it will come down to police resources, and police priorities
he didnt feel convinced this was going to change much.

I agree that squatters should have no rights when they have entered and settled in a house that is normally occupied, perhaps the owners are on holiday.
Where houses have lain empty for years and no one - private owners or the local authority have done anything with them, it's not surprising that they are used by squatters; many are done up and made habitable.
There are two different issues here.

i see that opponents of the new law are concened about homeless people but i don't see it as a problem as they mainly doss down as opposed to squatting and inhabit abandoned buildings at night.
the owners of derelict buildings seem to take no interest so the police would not be called and i don't foresee police making an issue of down and outs kipping in our multi storey car park.

There is homelessness and homelessness Howard. All those in temporary accommodation will still be classed as homeless too. When the party of the rosy hue holds sway those 'over-occupying' the homes of their parents or friends are also classed as homeless.
