By his own admission Howard he says he needs a spring clean, which is probably true of most users. Unsubscribing emails from a known source usually has the desired effect, however doing this to unsolicited emails only encourages the sender to continue as this verifies your address as active to spammers.
As an extra safeguard you could put a block on any unwanted missives or direct them to your trash folder with timed deletion, i.e. 'Remove after x days.'
A lot of the 'rubbish' tends to arrive from companies which you have perhaps dealt with and omitted to tick, or untick boxes for info from 'selected third parties' or some other fancy description!
