I havent as yet found the quote from Jack Straw but if he did say it then he was misguided. It strikes me as a very good shadow cabinet and in a way, although a surprise, I think Alan Johnson could be an inspired choice. There is a good mixture of new blood, but also some old hands like Johnson.
But here's the thing about Johnson...he is a very good communicator. He is very popular say on programmes like Question Time because he has that amiable yet common touch that appeals. He was one time touted as a possible Labour Leader because people recognised his abilities to good naturedly communicate.
Unfortunately in this day and age, age plays a part, and you cant lead a party anymore if you are getting on in years. Look briefly at the Menzies Campbell fiasco to see what I mean.
However Johnson will be very good as an antidote to all these very bad spending cuts coming, and will be the best placed Labour guy to capitalise on the Tories unfortunate and uncomfortable axe wielding position. Tories will be the baddies in all this, look at the benefits debacle, and Johnson will be the amiable uncle destined to play the nice guy alternative.
Looking at Question Time last night you can see how uncomfortable its going to be in the days ahead for the Tories. Its not easy in government and Baroness Varsi Tory Chariman got something of a roasting on tv last night in said programme.. bit of a change from the relatively comfortable position of opposition.
