My understanding from what I've seen and heard and from the people involved and close to this subject is that those living closest to the loudest noise were actually in favour of night flights and expansion at the airport. Consultation responses were mixed, but there seemed to be no clear call against night flights. I was told that the lobby against nightflights came from a relatively small but very vocal and influential group.
I remember a time when some very very loud military jets and bombers were based at Manston. These took off and landed at random hours, but at all hours day and night. Modern passenger aircraft are much quieter.
I believe that the airport made a proposal to provide sound proofing for homes that would be worst affected and to part fund sound proofing for other homes under the flight path to mitigate any increase in noise levels.
Its not as if 'night flights' means that flights would be tooing and froing all night long. What were the airport asking for? Was it for flights to be able to take off and land up to 2300 and then for them to be allowed to resume from about 0400? I'll have to look it up.
