I wondered what other Forumites thought about the necessity of Text Books for GCSE Students.
My daughters school issue text books to students in all subjects expect Science, they have substituted this with an online alternative, which they say is more up to date. Text Books however are available in the classroom and will be issued to students who do not have internet access at home.
Personally I feel that although it shows progression the internet should be an addition to text books not instead of. Maybe its because I remember using my text books for revision more than I used my own notes and that text books can be taken anywhere to revise where you cannot guarantee internet accessibility.
I am currently considering buying the text books myself as I feel they are a required element of learning.
What do you think?? am I too old fashioned?? am I halting progress or do you think I am being practical.

we had a thread on this a while back, this is the way forward it seems.
if i remember correctly our teacher members were broadly in favour of it.

I fail to see what is wrong if a page is needed it can be printed off and it is just as easy to read a computer screen as it is a book which as mentioned goes out of date.
The most important thing is what does your daughter think and which method would she prefer.

I try to be neutral and polite but it is hard and getting even more difficult at times.

just noticed that about it being science only, i can see the logic with such an ever changing subject with new discoveries.

I must have missed the previous thread Howard - sorry.
Sometimes it helps to get a different perspective on things.
My daughter had some difficulty accessing the on line text books, which the Head is sorting out for us, so at present she would prefer the hard copy, but once the access is sorted she probably would go down the on-line route, it certainly seems the way forward.
Thanks X
I prefer books for education and always will. They are a tangible piece of kit and can be dipped into. I know t'internet is also, but there are advantages to having a tangible object of reference. And I am a fan of alternative media for business and work purposes, so not just being a Neanderthal!
