    I think that the problem doesn't lie in immigration,as this is a matter of EU law,however one way of tackling immigration could be by implementing some or all of the following measures ;

    No benefits should be paid until the claimant (immigrant) has been in full time employment in this country for at least six months.

    No immigrant should be allowed entry unless he/she has confirmed accommodation. This can easily be verified by electoral roles,prepaid rent or bed and breakfast bookings.

    Children should have at least a promise of a place at a local school prior to entry.

    Medical checks should be a pre - requiste ensuring that all would be immigrants are innoculated upto UK standards. Therefore preventing the spread of diseases long since eradicated in this country.

    These measures do not prevent immigration and therefore do not contravene EU laws but are safeguards already in place within UK immigration law.

    It just takes a government with 'balls' to implement them.
