  Common sense alone will confirm that Labour's failure to limit immigration from Eastern Europe, as was allowed under transitionary arrangements, would result in a flood of low skilled immigration. Other EU countries did take advantage of the transitionary measure so why on earth did Labour fail to do so, that has never been explained. The impact of that also is quite obvious, downward pressure on wages and increase pressure on benefits.
  
  It is no good PaulB throwing up a smokescreen in trying to defend the last government and blaming the messenger. Their incompetence is there for all of us to see and we do not need these suppressed reports to prove it.
  
  Alex - what the government has found is the difficulty in closing the stable door after the horse has bolted, specially hampered as they are by the LibDems who are opposed to tougher controls on non-EU immigration. Nothing can be done about the EU part. Not yet anyway.
