The last 30 years of government has made a total mess of tertiary education, all political parties of all colours must share the blame for that.
Whilst I admire and support the students in their peaceful protest and the wit they have shown, we need to recognise that we have a created ludicrous aspiration that 50% of all 18 year olds will go to University. Sadly many of these students take courses that have little or no real value in the world outside university (no I am not talking about sciences or law or economics or architecture or engineering etc.). Too many graduates present applications for jobs that are poorly presented, full of spelling and grammar errors and so on. They too often have been lead to believe that they cannot fail and that they are some form of elite and consequently come across as arrogant at interview. Many seem to lack the ability to create a cogent argument on the hoof, or even structure an answer to straightforward questions and seem genuinely surprised when rejected.
Tertiary education needs to be radically overhauled with Universities being reduced significantly in numbers and truly catering to the best and brightest of our 18 year olds. We need to bring back Polytechnics or Technical Schools offering degrees in subjects that are of real use to business (Accounting, Economics, Engineering of all flavours, plus Professional Qualifications) as well as the old style Art Schools offering degrees in Art, Design and Fashion. We also need to strengthen Colleges of Further education to deliver quality job related HND/OND/C&G/NVQ courses for those who wish to continue education but do not or cannot get to University.
Our current system sadly betrays too many who get to university and abandons most of those who do not.
