  Having been on a train from London where I was the only one left in the carriage at Ashford when an intimidating bunch of rowdy older schoolchildren boarded I was very grateful when the guard came and sat in there.
  
  Driver only trains are fine , such as the short link cross county shuttle service where my son lives in Oxfordshire as that train only ever has a very few passengers during the day, but even that service has a guard on during the morning and evening rush hour.
