I read all the books about our town and must say the ones by Mr Leach and Mr Sutton are some of the very best. The above book tells you all about the streets in Dover and what was in them in the way of housing and shops etc if you can get hold of this book it is a very good read.

Here is one I did not know about ,for the members of the public who was in the army like myself,Blanco which was used to clean our webb belts etc was made in Dover,in fact at one time it was the only place that made it and it was all used by the army and made the person that run the company a very rich man but he was very good and handed alot of his cash over to help the poor of Dover. When you think that we was at that time one of the biggest armys in the world he must had been very rich. Its all in the above book and about the street you live in today and the history of it.If you wish to know more about your street I will tell you about it from the book.

As I said Winchelsea Road was named after Mr George Finch ,as worded in the book Lord Winchelsea who was Lord Warden of the Cinque ports during the reign of Charles 11, It was not named until 1879.Westbury rd where my family home was right up till the late 1980s was build in 1899.

The Finch family were the Earls of Winchelsea it was named after Heneage Finch(not sure were Goerge comes from) the 3rd Earl, Constable of Dover Castle, Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports and Lord Lieutenant of Kent. Plus numerous other titles.
Goerge Finch was the 9th Earl but never Lord warden,
I think mr Leach might have made a few minor errors!

Adrian Street. Now joins Chapel place.#Originally called Upwall or Above Wall, the latter appeared in St.Marys Vestry records as far back as 1639.
It was probably thus named as the street was above the medieval walls of the town, but was renamed Adrian street to mark the site of Adrian Gate ,one of the towns gates .Its house,s were demolished in 1937 and replaced with new house,s and flats.
