12:1078427Brian,
There are parts of Kent which have 'got it right'. Whitstable (Islington on Sea), Broadstairs (sand, Punch + Judy, and excellent fish and chips), Canterbury (shopping + cathedral). etc. etc.
The great shame is that Dover with a wider spread of history and 'monuments' than almost anywhere else in the country has not pushed its many unique selling points.

18:2578466That is very true Bob - sadly.
As you say we have more (diverse) historical sites than any other coastal Town from at least Southend to Southampton, but we don't exploit our heritage any where near as much as we should.#
Group Travel is another aspect of tourism we should be working on in a big way.

19:1078482Far too many 'mysterious' fires for my liking! On the other hand loads of cheap property for the DFLs + the HST.

19:4278489One of my intensions is to campaign for a tunnel under Townwall Street, and if technically possible, under Snargate Street too, and again if possible, under London Road. And for a no-traffic zone except for buses in Pencester Road and Worthington Strret.
This should make Dover more attractive to us and to visitors.
It's also nice to know that the White Cliffs of Dover have been chosen as a special area among the highranking 7 worl-wide, as Sue pointed out in a magazine article which I read in the Health Centre, an area largely protected from developers!

20:3878509Sorry but there is already a pedestrian tunnel under Townwall Street - it is, despite the rather excellent nautical tiles, dark dingy and seriously uninviting.
What we need is the land bridge that the DHB talked about some time ago ) something similar to this
http://www.sublimephotography.co.uk/eastendphotos/milendpk/pages/greenbrpan.htm would be wonderful) connecting the sea front via the Wellington Dock to the Town by the scrub land at the bottom of York Street.
I am not sure why you would want to put a tunnel, even if it was possible, under London Road, a better idea would be to put light controlled crossings in and reduce the speed limit to 20mph from the Town Hall all the way up to Coombe Valley Road.
I do agree that town centre traffic needs to be reviewed and consideration given to restrictions on who can go where when.

21:0878512As Bob mention`s above, there are many great places in Kent, and I`ve spent the last 20 years driving all round the county. Dover does indeed have much to offer, and in some cases, more than most. Again, as Bob mention`s above, it doesn`t always seem to be promoted as much as it should. I may be wrong of course.
Tell them that I came, and no one answered.

22:1778527Was that today Howard? Two fire engines with blue light and sirens went dashing past the shop this morning.

08:0278547Very subtle Howard.
I haven't read Frommers book, but it sounds like they didn't mention Dover. A few years ago, Lonely Planet guide book did a piece on Deal saying how wonderful it was, but "dodgy Dover" is just a few miles up the road.
If people actually came here and strolled the White Cliffs, visited the historic sites and attractions etc. they would see what great countryside, cliff-top walks and history, we have here.
