The problem is that we can't possibly get into the psyche of the Muslim world. Unfortunately they can't get into ours either which is why we had 9/11 etc.

Here is one example of a woman dressed in white, carrying a white ash wand and admitting her sin, at her local church:
Mary NEWINGTON, of Chartham, wore a white sheet and carried white wand as penance for "fornication or whoredom"
Carried out on 30 day of June 1754 in manner aforesaid. Signed. (JPB 148 Box, Canterbury Archives)
I believe the white wand signifies 'making pure' and clearing away sin.

"An Act against and for the punishment of Adultery in Connecticut.
"Be it enacted by the Governor, Council and Representatives in General Court assembled and by the authority of the same, that whosoever shall commit adultery with a married woman, and be therefore convicted before the superior court, both of them shall be severely punished, by whipping on the naked body and stigmatized, or burnt on the forehead with the letter "A" with a hot iron, and each shall wear an halter about their necks on the outside of their garments during their abode in this state, so as it be visible; and as often as either of them shall be found without halters worn as aforesaid they shall upon information and proof of the same made
before an Assistant or Justice of Peace, be by him ordered to be whipped, not exceeding 30 stripes"
"The above is one of the good wholesome laws made in the Connecticut State in the May Sessions 1784."
