It's nearly Christmas.........
Do you remember Christmas in the days long ago,
When Winters were freezing and we most times had snow?
Getting older tends to wind back your memory to yore,
In the case of this oldie, I recall some back in the war!
Food was in scarce supply so families made their treats,
Their mince pies and sausage rolls (with very little meat)!
Homemade Christmas puddings and Christmas cake too,
The house decorated with holly and branches from the Yew.
On Christmas Eve you hung a stocking at the foot of your bed,
Hoping to find presents next morning from the big man in red,
Leaving out a carrot for Santa's reindeer and a mince pie for him,
Too excited to sleep much, wondering what he might bring.
Awake early next morning still dark and so cold, not very nice,
Jack Frost had patterned the windows inside, coated in ice!
Had Santa visited last night and what delights would we discover?
I had left a 'I would like note' up the chimney, written by Mother.
Having plucked up the courage to brave the dark and cold air,
Peered out of the covers to see if a filled stocking was there,
Climbed out of bed excitedly to find with delight,
That indeed Father Christmas had been busy last night.
In the top of the stocking might be some wax crayons and a book,
And last years Beano annual which someone had forsook,
There was usually an apple, an orange and maybe a sweet too,
Perhaps a knitted balaclava, gloves or mittens in blue!
No one had much but families visited and celebrated together,
Homemade Christmas cards exchanged with friends wherever,
Christmas was a time for families and friends to celebrate, magic,
Since then Christmas has become more commercialised, tragic!
No more sooty notes placed up the chimney for Santa today,
Just e-mails and wish lists (forever changing), coming your way!
Children nowadays still look forward to presents they are given,
But as a child from the past I now find most pleasure in giving.
Much is still evolving in the world we grew up in long ago,
Times are getting more fraught, we reap what we sow,
So we must work for the future, not just hope for the best,
Think of family and others this Christmas and have a good rest!
The first Christmas, the beginning, there shone a bright star,
To guide shepherds and the Magi who came from afar,
Today the wars and suffering which can only end when,
We can all live peacefully together, but that'll need many wise men!

Do nothing and nothing happens.
