Just had this email from DDC...
Waste Collections Update
As temperatures continue to soar, our household waste crews are going to start their collections earlier than usual in Dover District next week.
They are set to begin their rounds on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday (18-20 July) at 5.30am so they can make the most of the cooler part of the morning. Should you choose to put your bins (including garden waste) out overnight, please secure them in a safe place. We thank residents in advance for their understanding.

Alarmed at the number of people walking their dogs in the town. At 2pm yesterday the pavement outside my house was 45C! At the moment my dog goes early morning and early evening, at least the hills behind me offer some shade.
Changing the subject I think I'll dig out my DVD of Soylent Green tonight!

What's the record temperature for Dover?
Passed through London from Paddington to St Pancras lunchtime - it was like a furnace, whereas Dover is just oven hot

Global warming. Fuel shortage. A lovely balmy evening. And Kings Head and Route One Café busy heating up the planet from Deal.

I'm starting to warm up to the idea of public utilities being taken back into public ownership so they can be run with the same efficiency as such as the NHS.

So if I understand it right - there is a drought in Dover but not a hosepipe ban?

I've just spent the last three weeks in Poland and the temperature was regularly 30c plus. Everyone just got on with their lives, no freezers broke down in supermarkets, trains ran regularly, the occasional massive thunderstorms caused a few downpours, but nothing catastrophic, and despite having drought conditions, everything worked and was business as usual.
Plus I could wash my car with a hosepipe
It was also interesting that when we drove back over the Rhine the other day, there were barges merrily delivering their goods up and down
Not bad in a country everyone thinks is cold

According to the media the UK seldom copes with anything that is not the norm, but whenever there is a major problem we do all seem to cope even if we moan about it.
