There are those people who through poor luck or misfortune find themselves out of work (redundancy, short term ill health or injury) but who genuinely want to get back to work and should be assisted by the state in making ends meet whilst they find work or retrain to find work. Equally there are those who are unable to work due to long term disability, mental illness etc. that through no fault of theirs will never work, who again deserve our support. Finally there are those that have been described as the "evil poor" (most memorably by the police blogger Nightjack) who have no intention of working, ever, who want the rest of us to support them either through benefits or through the theft of our belongings; it is this group that do not deserve our sympathy or support who should in fact not be tolerated by our society. I am more than happy to see the state deal with these people harshly and peremptorily even if it means we have to shell out to lock them up for the rest of their lives.
