I have just been trying to book a day trip to France this evening and it seems that even though I can see where I want to go, it will cost me a small fortune to get there!
I rarely start threads but this situation has left me speechless! (in a way!)
Now I'm not asking for a free ticket or preferential treatment as a Dovorian but £120 for 2 foot passenger returns seems a little steep! Without wanting to sound like my Nan, I remember the days when it only cost £1 return! Now I can understand the principles of demand and profit but the continual penalisation of pedestrians on the ferries seems to be a little harsh. P&O offering this price and the other operators not recognising foot passengers at all, I feel a little put out! It is no wonder we cannot sustain a youth hostel, or benefit from foreign tourists.
It seems as though this is all part of a masterplan by the ferry operators, a trend that is finally reaching it's ultimate conclusion with a little encouragement! I remember the arrival and departure lounges, with dusty yucca plants, luggage carousels, bored looking customs officers and wobbly daytrippers wheeling shopping trolleys of 'Fosters' from one end of the port to the other, whilst trying not to drop their bag of fags and bottle Bacardi...where have these people gone, what are they doing??!!!
I know times change, but £120, come on, without wanting to sound like my Nan (again), it's daylight robbery!
Hopefully someone can tell me how I can get to Calais or Boulogne without spending the same amount it would cost me to get to Barcelona! At least then I can stop swearing!
