FitzRoy Somerset, later elevated to the title Lord Raglan, served the Duke of Wellington from 1807 through the Peninsular and Waterloo campaigns in appointments that continued until the Duke's death in 1852. He suffered serious wounds in Portugal and lost an arm at Waterloo.

Raglan was the commander of the British force in the Crimean War, but his health failed and he died there in 1855.

In Tony Richardson's 1968 film The Charge of the Light Brigade Raglan is superbly played by John Guilgud.
