Can any of you ladies out there tell me if I can make Jam or Marmalade in a slow cooker? Mine has a high setting which pretty much keeps food on a fast bubble. I have a recipe for Clementine Marmalade but my biggest saucepan is a bit small and my daughter suggested I try the slow cooker.

It works perfectly.
I made my chutneys for Christmas in my slow cooker. I also made a chili jam, which is nice with cheese on toast.
Like all these things though it makes a real job of cleaning. Although I see that as a job for females.
Oi!!!!
Chili jam.....mmmmm.......

Have a stew at this very moment slow cooking as we speak in mine, but hey good to know that you chaps are getting in on the act of cooking, I know young Howard invested in one not so long ago.
So good luck Diana with the Clementine Marmalade i'm sure it will be scrumy.

Thank you for the link Tom but the 9 litre pan is nearly as big as my kitchen
Colette: anytime - baking tomorrow!

good memory jan i use mine about twice a week, much the same as the slow cooker.
ted is right about the book, he recommended it to me so i know what is in there.
My slow cooker was a Christmas present and I have used it about twice a week too. Sunday leftovers get chucked in with the addition of herbs, spices and exotic sauces for "garbage soup". Smashing with fresh bread.
I would appreciate the name of the cookbook mentioned above.

Re Jam - a slow cooker would no doubt be excellent for (firstly) cooking the fruit, orange peel etc.
but I doubt if you could have the rolling boil for 20 minutes needed to set the jam, and keep an eye on it at the same time !!
I use a large pressure-cooker saucepan for jam making (not under pressure though).

Have made marmalade in pressure cooker with a friend (it was her pressure cooker) and it worked well. As I recall we did not fiddle about too much but had to go through it with the fingers to get the pips out.
Kath: I am sure you are right - that is what I thought.
Howard: thanks for info about cook book.
I just want to get about a 4 litre saucepan but Argos haven't got one - is there anywhere else in range for not very mobile non-car-owners?
